Pu Luong

In Thai, Pu Luong means "the highest peak in the village".

Located approximately 160 km from Hanoi, the Pu Luong Nature Reserve is home to the Thai and Muong ethnic groups. In Thai, Pu Luong means "the highest peak in the village." Situated in the northwest of Thanh Hoa province, Pu Luong covers 17,662 hectares and encompasses dense forests, large and small waterfalls, caves, and mountains dotted with peaceful villages and verdant terraced rice paddies each summer.

One look at the Pu Luong Nature Reserve is enough to understand why Thais have long chosen this charming valley as their home. The laid-back lifestyle in Pu Luong contrasts sharply with the hustle and bustle of the capital, just a few hours away. Majestic mountains, lush valleys, and pristine jungles are just a few of the many excellent reasons to visit. Here are seven ways to make the most of your stay in this magnificent destination.

Visit a Thai village
Pu Luong is dotted with picturesque villages, each with its own unique history. The majority of the reserve's population is Thai, an ethnic group comprised of two local branches: White Thai and Black Thai. The Thai excel at irrigated rice cultivation, and their houses are built on stilts. Staying with a local family is an excellent way to experience local customs and learn more about the lives of this Vietnamese ethnic minority.

Immersion in nature
The mountains of Pu Luong are covered in rainforest, while the valleys are blanketed in cultivated terraced rice paddies. Take a walk in the valley or on the foothills to discover the rich local flora and fauna. Listen to the murmur of the water and the rustling of the forest, greet the farmers and grazing water buffalo, and capture the lush greenery and wildlife on camera. For a breath of fresh air, head to the Pu Luong Nature Reserve.

Participate in a craft workshop

In Pu Luong, ancestral customs are passed down from generation to generation. The Thai people perpetuate these ancestral practices, which are an integral part of their culture and community. Weaving, embroidery, basketry, and bamboo furniture making are essential skills. Take advantage of your stay to discover these traditions in a craft workshop. You will learn new techniques, contribute to the development of the local economy, and participate in the preservation of these centuries-old traditions.

Enjoy homemade cuisine, from producer to consumer

Nothing beats dishes prepared with local ingredients. Pu Luong is brimming with delicious vegetables, such as baby pumpkins, green beans, and bamboo shoots. With so many fresh options, you're sure to find new flavors to savor. For an authentic Pu Luong lunch or dinner, try the local pork and grilled mountain snails in fish sauce.

Hike to the summit of Mount Pu Luong

Hiking is the best way to immerse yourself in the majestic natural beauty of Pu Luong. Since access to maps and marked trails is limited within the reserve, hiring a local guide will save you time and help you find the perfect route. You can choose to climb Mount Pu Luong or embark on a multi-day trek through the entire reserve. Either way, the experience will be unforgettable.

Authentic homestay

Homestays make up the majority of accommodations in Pu Luong. The advantage? Each guesthouse is secluded and peaceful, offering a wide range of options, from cabins clinging to the mountainside to stilt houses nestled amidst terraced rice paddies. While there are a few resorts, guesthouses, and even treehouses, homestays provide a truly memorable experience in the heart of the reserve's serene landscape.
